Employers who increase their staff numbers in New South Wales may now be eligible for rebates from the NSW Office of State Revenue (OSR) regardless of whether or not they are liable for Payroll Tax.

Small Business Grant
Also as of 1 July 2015, employers who are not liable for Payroll Tax may be eligible for the new Small Business Grant of $2,000. To be eligible the employer must :

(1)    Have an active ABN and not be registered for Payroll Tax;
(2)    Employ someone in a new job after 1 July 2015 and maintain that position (and overall staff numbers) for at least 12 months;
(3)    Register the new position within 60 days after the employment commences, and
(4)    Ensure that the services of the employee are performed wholly, or mainly, in NSW.

Job Action Plan and Fresh Start Support Scheme
Employers who are liable for Payroll Tax should already be aware of the Job Action Plan that may entitle them to a Payroll Tax rebate of up to $5,000 as a result of increasing their staff numbers.

As of 1 July 2015, employers who are liable for Payroll Tax who employ new staff that had previously been made redundant from another employer could now be eligible for an additional $1,000 under the Fresh Start Support scheme.
